International Women’s Day

This International Women's Day, we're highlighting women authors who excel at giving voice to female experiences and who expand our view of the world.

ON FEMALE DESIRE

"We pretend to want things we don't want so nobody can see us not getting what we need," writes Lisa Taddeo in her groundbreaking nonfiction book Three Women. Watch her in conversation with Regina Marler at CLF 2021 about her work exploring women's raw, real-life emotional and sexual desires.

ON WOMEN, FAMILY, BELONGING, AND NEURO-SCIENCE

Yaa Gyasi's most recent novel Transcendent Kingdom, shortlisted for the Women's Prize for Fiction, centers around a family of Ghanian immigrants in Alabama, ravaged by depression, addiction and grief. Watch as she talks with Kerri Forrest about her female protagonist Gifty's attempt to unlock the mystery of her family's hardship and loss.

ON WOMEN IN HISTORY

Lauren Groff's Matrix is a tale of an unorthodox 12th century Abbey, in a remote part of England, run by an inspirational Prioress loosely based on the poet Marie de France. Her transformation of the run-down Abbey into a thriving community is a remarkable demonstration of female power and creativity. Watch Lauren Groff discuss her medieval female utopia and explain her defense of historical fiction (in the face of literary snobs!) with author Regina Marler.
